BBCG.07.04.D365.2.PDF: Configuring Product Information Management within Dynamics 365 SCM (Second Edition) - Module 4: Configuring Product Categories and Attributes (Digital)
The Waterdeep Trading Company is the purveyor of all the finest adventuring supplies to travelers, rogues, wizards, and clerics in all Faerûn and is headquartered in the great city of Waterdeep on the Sword Coast.
Recently they have been experiencing a huge upswing in the traffic through their store and have realized that the old quill and scroll-based financial system is not going to scale anymore. Their manual supply chain management processes that they are using will not handle their forecasted future demand.
As a result, they have taken the step to modernize their finance and supply chain systems and implement Microsoft Dynamics 365 to manage all their legal (and not so legal) entities. And the following is a journal of how they set up their system and how they tweaked the system to make it work perfectly. The Product Information Management area within Dynamics 365 not only allows you to manage all the core product details. It is also the central location for all the other product information such as the Product Attributes, Product Categories, External Product Descriptions, and Product Structures. It also allows you to track the interrelationships between the products through this part of the system with the Product Relationships. If you want to add more control over the product's life cycle, you can use the Product Change Management Cases. This information is managed through this one location and then consumed within all the other modules.
Setting up the Product and Service details are not hard either, and this guide is designed to give you step by step instructions to show you how to configure the Product Information Management area and how some of the essential parts work to get you up and running and working with your Products and Services. If we have any additional information or properties that we want to track against a product, we don't have to resort to adding fields to the table and then modifying the forms so that we have a place to store it. Instead, we can take advantage of the product attributes feature within Dynamics 365 to add an unlimited number of additional pieces of data. We don't even have to have the exact attributes for all of the products. By using the Product Categories, we can assign specific groups of attributes to different groups of products.
