The Waterdeep Trading Company is the purveyor of all the finest adventuring supplies to travelers, rogues, wizards, and clerics in all Faerûn and is headquartered in the great city of Waterdeep on the Sword Coast.

Recently they have been experiencing a huge upswing in the traffic through their store and have realized that the old quill and scroll-based financial system is not going to scale anymore. Their manual supply chain management processes that they are using will not handle their forecasted future demand.

As a result, they have taken the step to modernize their finance and supply chain systems and implement Microsoft Dynamics 365 to manage all their legal (and not so legal) entities. And the following is a journal of how they set up their system and how they tweaked the system to make it work perfectly.

The Product Information Management area within Dynamics 365 not only allows us to manage all the core product details, but it is also the central location for all the other product information such as the Product Attributes, Product Categories, External Product Descriptions, and Product Structures.

It allows us to track the products' interrelationships through this part of the system with the Product Relationships. If we want to add more control over the product's life cycle, we can use the Product Change Management Cases.

All this information is managed through this one location and then consumed within all the other modules.

Setting up the Product and Service details are not hard either, and this guide is designed to give us step by step instructions to show us how to configure the Product Information Management area and how some of the essential parts work to get us up and running and working with our Products and Services. Now that we have all the basic codes and controls configured, we can start adding some real products and services into the Product Information Management area.

This module will show how we can set up products and services, load in all our products in bulk through the Data Import Export Framework, and even how to use Excel workbooks to make mass updated to the products.

Topics Covered

  • Creating New Products
  • Importing Products Using The Data Import Export Framework
  • Creating A Service Item
  • Creating Product Templates
  • Updating Product Details Within The Grid
  • Performing Mass Updated Using Excel Templates
