The Waterdeep Trading Company Project Diary

Posted by Author and Purveyor of the finest Collars & Tack for Canine & Equine Performances at Microsoft on

I am reviving an old project that started a while ago and has started up a new project blog to track the progress. Being a lifelong fan of Dungeons & Dragons, with the unfortunate problem that I cannot find anyone to play with I have decided to create a test implementation Dynamics AX in the AD&D format just to see how it would work and if I can find some creative ways to use Dynamics AX and chose to implement the Waterdeep Trading Company as an example where I can track their many legal (and not so legal) entities within Faerûn.

In this project, we will walk through a simpler setup of Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, using the sample demo database that is delivered with the demo systems so that you can quickly create your own Waterdeep Trading Company legal entity and even tweak it so that it is more in the spirit of adventuring in the Dungeons & Dragons theme.

All of the content for this will be available through the Dynamics Companions website as Premium Member Content only and will include the walkthrough and the PowerPoint companions that you will be able to download in their original formats.

Here is a snippet of the first step in the guides.

Introduction

The Waterdeep Trading Company is the purveyor of all of the finest adventuring supplies to travelers, rogues, wizards, and clerics in all of Faerûn, and are headquartered in the great city of Waterdeep on the Sword Coast.

Recently they have been experiencing a huge upswing in the traffic through their store and have realized that the old quill and scroll based financial system is not going to scale anymore, and also their manual supply chain management processes that they are using will not be able to handle their forecasted future demand.

As a result, they have taken the step to modernize their finance and supply chain systems and implement Microsoft Dynamics 365 to manage all of their legal (and not so legal) entities, and the following is a journal of how they set up their system, and how they tweaked the system to make it work perfectly for them.

If you want to follow along on the journey and set up your own copy of the system, then feel free.

Opening up Dynamics 365 for the first time

Once the Waterdeep Trading Company got a notification that their Dynamics 365 instance had been provisioned for them, they wanted to dive in right away and start configuring it right away so that they could keep on their implementation timeline and be up and running before the next surge in sales.

How to do it

Getting into Dynamics 365 was really simple. All they needed to do was go to the Dynamics home page and then open up the home workspace.

To do this, they just opened up a browser and went to home.dynamics.com.

This took them to the Dynamics 365 home page where they were able to see all of the workloads of Dynamics 365 that they were able to access, and there was a tile for Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations which is the core application that they will be setting up.

Step 1: Click on Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations tile

To access Dynamics 365, they just needed to open up the Finance and Operations module.

To do this just click on the Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations tile.

This opens up the initial workspace within the Dynamics 365 module where we see all of the different workspaces that are delivered out of the box for them.

Review

Getting into Dynamics 365 was really easy for the Waterdeep Trading Company administrator, and now that they had access to the full system as the system administrator they were able to start setting everything up.
